The Reading JV Football team hosted the Concord Yellowjackets this past Thursday night at historic Barre Field.
After a slow offensive possession to start the game the Ranger defense would come up big stuffing a fake punt by Concord deep to take the ball over on the 33 yard line. It would take the Rangers just 3 plays to score as Aaron Bignell ran for a 13 yard touchdown. Roger Hill would add the two point conversion to make the score 8-0 Rangers with 5:05 remaining in the 1st quarter.
The Yellowjackets would respond quickly with a touchdown of their own. In what would be a key theme throughout the night the Rangers made a big 2 point stop with the help of Jake Elder. leaving the score 8-6 Rangers with 4 minutes to go in the 1st quarter.
The two teams would then trade possession as a fumble recover by Dilon Denison gave the Rangers strong field position. It would take the Rangers just 3 plays to go 33 yard again as Roger HIll found pay dirt on a 1 yard touchdown run. Hill would add the 2 point conversion to make the score 16-6 Rangers at the end of the 1st quarter.
The Big Red defense would step up again and force a punt. The Ranger offense and some strong running from the backfield including Gabe Rife and Matthew Stewart, and Bignell would lead to a strong 1 yard touchdown run by Roger Hill. Hill would add the 2 point conversion to make the score 24-6 with 5:11 to play in the half.
A Porter Mauk interception would help the Rangers go into the half with a 24-6 lead.
The Yellowjackets would score a touchdown and another big 2 point conversion stop by the Ranger defense would make the score 24-12, 6:32 second into the 3rd quarter.
The Ranger offensive line of Dension, Londeau, Elder, Rhoades, Pitts. Rockins, and Wiler would own the trenches as they help lead an 8 play 80 yard drive that was capped off by a 3 yard touchdown run by Hill. Bignell would add the 2 point conversion to make the score 32-12 Rangers with 3:09 remaining in the 3rd quarter.
The Yellowjackets would add another touchdown late and the defense would again stop the two point conversion, this time the younger Rangers got in on the action with Connor Barnett making the play to help the team win by a final win by a final score of 32-18.
“It was another good team win.” said Coach Kerspilo. “We started to control the line of scrimmage and all of our backs ran hard, it is just what we need to continue to have success, especially on a soggy night like tonight.”
The Rangers are now 3-0 and 2-0 in the Big 8 conference. They will host the Quincy Orioles next Thursday night game time is 6:30 pm.
