The Reading Rangers Boys Varsity Basketball team hosted the state ranked and undefeated Quincy Orioles this past Tuesday night.
The two teams played the first quarter to an 11-11 tie with the help of three points from Porter Mauk, Nick Affholter, and Damon Black.
Both teams would battle back and forth in the second quarter and three points from Mauk and Alex Price would help lead the way as the Orioles held a small 23-21 advantage at the half.
In third quarter the strong team effort would continue as four points from Price and three points from Dilon Dension would see the Rangers staying close as Quincy held a 33-32 advantage.
The great play from both teams would continue in the fourth quarter as two of Price’s 10 points in the quarter would tie the game with under a minute to play. The Rangers would play strong defense and prevent the Orioles from scoring. The game would head into overtime tied at 54-54.
In the first overtime, two free throws from Alex Price would again help tie the game and the Rangers would play excellent defense to hold the Orioles and send the game into a second overtime tied 58-58.
In the second overtime two three point baskets from Dilon Dension including one to tie the game at at 64-64 would see the Rangers playing defense once again to extend the game . Quincy would make a basket with 5 seconds to play. The Rangers were not able to convert on a last second attempt and fell by a final score of 66-64.
“It was an awesome atmosphere with great fan support and a great high school basketball game.” said Coach Kerspilo. “Despite coming up a little short, we’re proud of how we played and want to strive to keep getting better as we get closer to tournament time.”
The Rangers were led by Ale Price with 21 points. Dilon Dension finished with 15 points. Nick Affholter and Damon Black each added 7 points, while Tyler Whinnie and Porter Mauk chipped in 6 points each.
The Rangers are now 6-9 on the season. They will travel to Union City to take on the Chargers this Friday. Game time is 7 pm.
