On Saturday, January 4th, the Reading wrestlers grappled the day away at Hillsdale High School for the 45th annual Dan Taylor Memorial Wrestling Invitational. The Rangers started the day on a strong note with 14 guys advancing to the quarterfinals. While there were some losses in the quarterfinals, the Rangers managed to get 8 of the 14 through to the semifinals. Rangers Eathan Westfall (215), Elijah Strine (215), and Josh Johnson (285) won their semifinal matches and made it to the finals. Westfall and Strine wrestled one another in the 215-pound final with Strine coming out on top with a 3-1 decision. En route to his first-place finish, Strine earned a 10-0 major decision against Joe Edmonds of Harper Creek, a 28 second fall against Cruz Sanchez of Brandywine in the quarterfinals, and a 1:18 fall against Kimball Hughes of Pittsford in the semifinals. Johnson dominated his way through the tournament pinning all four opponents. He opened the tournament with a 50 second fall against Ypsilanti’s Kameron James. In the quarters he took 1:04 seconds to pin Michael Edwards of Quincy, which he followed up with a 2:32 pin against Seth Musgrave of Hudson in the semifinals. In his final match of the day, it took only 1:20 for him to earn the fall and first place honors against Logan Horn of Hillsdale. Placing 2nd for the Rangers was Eathan Westfall. Placing 3rd for the Rangers were Dalton Green (112) and Ted Ankney (171). Placing 4th for the Rangers were Hunter Dewey (103), Randy LoPresto (112), and Lukas Selph (119). Reading took 4th place out of 16 teams with a score of 127 points, outscoring Big 8 opponents Quincy and Concord by 30.5 and 104 points, respectively. The Ranger wrestlers open the league competition against the Homer Trojans this Wednesday, January 8th at RHS. The match begins at 6pm. Come cheer on the Rangers!
