The Reading Rangers hosted the Homer Trojans this past week in the regular season finale, with the Rangers needing a win to earn at least a share of the Big 8 Conference Championship.
The two teams would battle back and forth in the first quarter. A hot outside shooting Gabe Rife would lead the way with 9 points and the teams would be tied 15-15 at the end of the 1st quarter.
The second period was much of the same with teams trading baskets. The Rangers were able to make a late surge in the half, sparked by the play of Jayson Scoville. The Big Red would take a 30-23 halftime lead.
In the third quarter the intensity would remain. Dilon Denison’s 7 points would help allow the team to keep a 46-43 advantage heading into the final frame.
In the final quarter the Trojans would cut the lead to 1 point with just under a minute to play. Strong play from Rife and Denison, along with Ben Affholter helping ice the game with 6 straight free throws helped put the game away and the Rangers would win by a final score of 63-59 and a share of the Big 8 title!
“It’s been a really fun season and we have a great group of guys.” said Coach Kerspilo. “We’re very proud of how we have played all season and stuck together.” “Our team is filled with tremendous student-athletes and we’ve played unselfishly all season, we feel like we deserved the championship and we defiantly earned the right to win the title!”
The Rangers were lead by Gabe Rife with 21 points. Dilon Denison finished with 17 points, 12 rebounds, and 5 assists. Ben Affholter finished with 14 points.
The win gives the Rangers a 16-4 record overall and they finished 12-2 in the Big 8 conference. They will play the Homer Trojans again this Monday night at Concord to open up post-season play. Game time is 7 pm.
